This novel follows a family through colonial times of Southeast Asia- primarily Burma and Malaysia. Having traveled extensively throughout SE Asia and having a grandparent born abroad in Burma some of the history of this era was especially fascinating. I am a sucker for any story that actually teaches me something and this one does not disappoint. From teak, rubber and oil to indentured workers from the Indian subcontinent – there’s very little the colonial powers of the time did not endeavor to thoroughly exploit.
Colonialism aside, the family stories told here are rich with character, thoroughly engaging and draw you into a different time and place.
Would I recommend? Yes, the beginning is a little slow but don’t give up.
